Platelet-Rich Stroma (PRS) Injection Provides Great Improvement in Depressed Scars

Abstract 

Patients who have depressed scars experience both psychological and esthetic problems. However, multi-modality treatment was preferred because no single treatment is sufficient on its own. The authors hypothesize that injections of stromal vascular fraction (SVF) combined with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) as a new autologous treatment can improve depressed scars effectively. According to the inclusion criteria, 20 patients with depressed scars resulting from various causes were observed in the research. A single injection of harvestable PRS (combination of PRP and SVF) was administered to all patients as part of the treatment. The POSAS scale was used to evaluate scars both pre- and postoperatively at 6 months. A paired t-test was used to determine whether the scar features and symptoms had improved. Photographic comparisons were taken before and after the surgery. The degree of improvement of the depressed scar was graded, and the efficacy was evaluated using the POSAS total score. Before and 6 months after therapy, there were statistically significant variations in the scar index values (P < 0.05). The overall efficacy rate (17/20) was 85% among all patients, with 12 cases of tertiary improvement and 5 cases of improvement in grade 4. There were no lumps or cord-like indurations in the filling sites of the 20 patients. As a promising regeneration treatment, autologous PRS injection is suitable in healing the depressed scar.
