To the Editor: The difficulty of evaluation of febrile children with sickle cell disease (SCD) combined with the absence of specific and reliable tests is a major issue in this population [

The aim of this study was to investigate if the procalcitonin (PCT) level could help to predict invasive bacterial infection (IBI) in SCD children with fever without source, and to discuss its advantages and limitations. The children were categorized into 2 groups: Group 1 included children with documented bacterial invasive infection, defined by the identification of germs in blood, urine, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), stool cultures and serologies; Group 2 included all children without proven bacterial infection.
