Abstract

Patent ductus arteriosus in adults is rare condition. Surgical repair of adult patent ductus arteriosus carries a high risk of complications due to frequent presence of calcification. A 77-year-old woman with severe aortic stenosis was referred to our hospital. Cardiac catheterization revealed right coronary artery stenosis. Aortogram showed a left-to-right shunt. Computed tomography demonstrated the presence of patent ductus arteriosus, with calcification of the aortic side. The patient underwent transcatheter closure of the patent ductus arteriosus, in order to decrease the risk of cardiac surgery. Subsequently, aortic valve replacement and coronary artery bypass grafting were performed and the patient’s postoperative course was uneventful. This operative strategy for severe aortic stenosis and calcified patent ductus arteriosus was a safe and effective method for an aged patient.
