Obesity and obesity-related metabolic disorders are rapidly increasing worldwide [
1]. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a related disease and its progression leads to liver inflammation (non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, NASH) which has become the leading cause of cirrhosis in the world [
2]. NASH prevalence increases in parallel with the rise of BMI, reaching up to 20% in subjects with obesity and 50% in subjects with morbid obesity [
3]. Additionally, it is estimated that 20% of patients with NASH will develop liver cirrhosis within 5 years after diagnosis. Therefore, NASH preventing and treating strategies are of utmost importance to avoid the rise in cirrhosis prevalence. In this regard, weight loss is the cornerstone for the treatment of NAFLD and NASH, and bariatric surgery (BS) is recognized as the most effective treatment for weight loss and resolution of metabolic-related diseases [
