Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor After Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy: Be Awake Before, During, and After a Bariatric Procedure

The annual incidence of gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) has been observed to be higher in obese patients undergoing bariatric surgery (0.6–0.8%) in comparison to general population (0.0006 to 0.0015%) as stated in the previous studies [13]. Lack of clinical symptoms and findings on preoperative upper esophago-gastro-duodenoscopy (EGD) makes its diagnosis difficult in bariatric population. As expected, this is not surprising considering that the tumors were found on the serosal side of the stomach without any mucosal involvement. It is likely that the GISTs would not have been diagnosed even if the patients have undergone routine EGD. …
