Dr. Jan Willem Greve studied medicine at the Catholic University of Leuven Belgium. He received his diploma in 1981 with honors. His surgical residency took place from 1981 to 1989 at the Academic Hospital in Maastricht, Netherlands, under the guidance of Professor Co Greep and Professor Gauke Kootstra. During his surgical residency, he spent 1 ½ years (1987–1988) in the lab to complete his PhD thesis entitled, “Complications in Obstructive Jaundice. An Experimental Study on Etiology and Prevention.” His PhD supervisor was Professor Peter Soeters. Co-supervisors were Professor Wim Buurman and Professor Dirk Gouma. Dr. Greve successfully defended his PhD thesis in 1990. After his training in general surgery, Dr. Greve was given a position as a trauma surgeon and surgical intensivist at the Academic Hospital Maastricht (AZM). In 1992, he was appointed as assistant professor at the University of Maastricht (at that time University of Limburg) followed by an appointment as associate professor in 1994. Dr. Greve was involved in research programs at the Maastricht University in nutrition—in particular, gut barrier function and inflammation—and basic research on inflammation and gut hormones in morbidly obese patients. From 1990 onwards, he was involved in the bariatric surgical program of the Academic Hospital Maastricht under the guidance of Professor Peter Soeters. …
