In 1931, in his famous treatise “The Beginning of the World from the Point of View of Quantum Theory,” the Belgian cosmologist Georges Lemaître first proposed the notion whereby the entire observable universe of galaxies expanded from an initial point, the so-called primeval atom. Representing a radical departure from the scientific orthodoxy of the time, this momentous idea was initially met with skepticism; yet it is now considered the true primer of the modern “Big Bang Theory” of the origin of the universe. …
