Is schistosomiasis japonica a negative short-term or long-term prognostic factor in patients with acute appendicitis?

New purported associations between schistosomiasis and human pathologies keep emerging to highlight the burden of this tropical disease, nonetheless causal inference remains controversial. Among these, schistosome-associated acute appendicitis (SAA) has been reported in 0.003–2.1% of appendiceal surgical specimens [
1]. In a recent article on the CT characteristics in the diagnosis of
Schistosoma japonicum (
S. japonicum)-associated appendicitis, Valluru and colleagues pointed significant differences between SAA and ordinary acute appendicitis [
