The Stigmatization of Neurological and Mental Health Conditions: Epilepsy as a Case Example

Redressing the stigmatization of mental illness remains elusive even in this heralded age of social acceptance and diversity. Although clinically not defined as a mental illness, the long history of scholarly focus on epilepsy and its psychosocial significance serves as a model in describing the stigmatization of abnormal neurological disorders. Although the scholarly community continues to report on the stigmatization of mental illness, there has been little success over the past 20 years to ameliorate the problem. …
