I received the following correspondence in response to my article (Borrell, 2003) from an Australian gambler who has evidently suffered greatly through her long contact with gaming machines. I was immediately struck by the profoundness of its substance and the evocative slant given to concepts that otherwise receive routine and often shallow treatment within the gambling literature. Thus, with the writer's permission, I submitted the letter for publication for the contribution I believe it can make to our shared understanding of what exactly constitutes ‘problem gambling,’ especially as associated with gaming machines. …
