A modified direct-heating headspace solid-phase microextraction method for drug screening with urine samples

In forensic autopsy cases, it is important to quickly identify the drugs and chemicals that caused poisoning in humans. Previously, we reported a direct-heating headspace solid-phase microextraction (DH-HS-SPME) method for the screening of illicit drugs [1]. The DH-HS-SPME has an advantage in that volatile to non-volatile compounds can be adsorbed to the SPME fiber in the headspace vial that enables comprehensive screening of compounds by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). In this letter, we present application of this DH-HS-SPME method to actual urine samples from suspects of drug abuse together with some modifications to enhance its sensitivity. …
