Factors Associated with Geographic Variation in Psychiatric Prescription Drug Expenditures Among Medicaid Beneficiaries

Expenditures for mental health treatment have risen considerably in recent years, and much of this trend is explained by significant increases in the use of psychiatric medications.1 , 2 These drugs are continually becoming safer, with fewer side effects,3 increasing the likelihood that providers will include them in treatment plans and that clients will be comfortable continuing to use them. Similarly, as stigma associated with using psychiatric medications has decreased, many people have felt more comfortable considering this treatment option alongside other forms of treatment.4
