Minimally invasive monitoring of cardiac output and lung gas exchange: taking it mainstream

Measurement of cardiac output dramatically expands the scope of haemodynamic assessment available to the clinician. When combined with routine measurements of circulatory pressure, calculation of vascular resistance can be done, and this directly informs decision making about volume, inotrope and vasoactive drug therapy. Measurement of stroke volume or cardiac output also provides the most direct assessment of fluid responsiveness in a patient. The potential value of this kind of advanced haemodynamic assessment to improve patient management in major surgery and critical care has been a focus of considerable research interest [1]. …
