Societal and global implications of the “dementia epidemic”: the example of the London Heathrow airport

On the August 16th 2016, a press release announced the commitment of London Heathrow to become the “world’s first dementia-friendly airport” [1]. All the 76,000 airport employees will be made aware of dementing illnesses through specific training in order to better support travellers with dementia. In particular, more than 1000 frontline staff will be deployed as “Dementia Friends”. Dedicated lounge areas will also be arranged in the terminals [1]. This initiative conducted in collaboration with the Alzheimer’s Society is aimed at changing the global attitudes towards dementia in the context of the Dementia Friendly Communities program. …
