The study by Swanson et al. sought to assess the implied premise of the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) policy that automatically registering Veterans who require a fiduciary into the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) will lead to a reduction in suicides or harmful violence. Registration in NICS is intended to prohibit purchase of a firearm. This policy raises an ultimate key question: Does such registration save lives? It is in this context that the authors seek to approximate an answer, mindful of many limitations they acknowledge and some that they do not mention. …
