HTA in Central and Eastern European countries; the 2001: A Space Odyssey and efficiency gain

Most of the countries in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) experienced a decrease of their gross domestic product (GDP) due to the financial crisis, followed by a longer than projected stagnation period suffering from the lack of economic growth. While several papers have been published on the impact of the crisis on health care systems in the past years, very few of them were focused on the health status of the population, and almost none of them provided valid data on health loss due to the crises. Numerous papers focused on Greece and on those countries that were affected most by the recession [1, 2]. However, there is limited knowledge on the impact of the economic recession on health and health care in the CEE member states of the European Union (EU). …
