Professor Ladislau Steiner passed away on February 27, 2013. He was a unique person and my respected teacher, mentor, and friend. Tributes to his lifetime achievements have already been given by a number of distinguished colleagues in the most respected journals of neurosurgery. It is unique that a neurosurgeon who was never the president of any international or national organization and never the chairman of a neurosurgical department has been bestowed such accolades from so many colleagues.
