Thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO) is an immune-mediated inflammation of the extraocular muscles and surrounding connective tissues that occurs in autoimmune thyroid disorder which causes orbital fat and muscle expansion. Typical TAO symptoms include upper eyelid retraction, exophthalmos, periorbital edema, and external ophthalmoplegia without pain. In respect to other autoimmune thyroid disorders, TAO usually occurs in Grave’s disease with hyperthyroidism but can rarely occur with hypothyroidism, euthyroid conditions, or Hashimoto’s thyroiditis [14]. …
