My longtime interest in herniology began soon after becoming a medical student at Cambridge. Fascination with the complexity of the groin and its many rings made me decide to become a surgeon. In preparation, I took an extra year in anatomy, which was still in its golden age. The dogma was that inguinal herniae were congenital defects in normal tissues, which would stay so. …
