José Goyanes Capdevila was born in Monforte (Lugo), a small town in the northwestern region of Spain known as Galicia, in 1876 (Fig. 1). He studied medicine in Madrid, obtaining his doctorate with honors in 1901. By competitive examination at the age of 29, he gained a position as professor of surgery at the Provincial Hospital in Madrid, where he continued for most of his professional career.×
