In September of 2004, the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) approved updated Standards for Commercial Support, to which all ACCME-accredited organizations are expected to adhere [4]. These standards have resulted from the increasing role of industry in supporting continuing medical educational (CME) activities in the United States [1] and from the need to maintain objectivity for CME-related programs independent of commercial interests. Similar efforts also are underway in the publishing industry to identify conflicts of interest between investigators and funding sources for medical research to ensure the scientific integrity of medical publications [2]. …
