Mitochondrial response to inactivity-induced muscle disuse and exercise training

Maintenance of skeletal muscle mass is crucial for healthy aging. Long periods of inactivity result in skeletal muscle atrophy and may be followed by incomplete recovery, for instance, after hospital stays. Repeated periods of inactivity accelerate skeletal muscle atrophy and deteriorate lifestyle by increasing the risk of falls and leading to loss of independence (Booth et al. 2017). Maintenance of healthy skeletal muscles is also crucial to prevent or delay the development of metabolic diseases. Skeletal muscle accounts for the majority of post-prandial glucose uptake, and insulin resistance in skeletal muscle is strongly associated with type 2 diabetes (Sylow et al. 2021). …
