We are saddened to report that Professor Ian McDonald died in his sleep on December 13th 2006, aged 73 years. Ian was born in New Zealand and obtained his medical degree and PhD at the University of Otago. His PhD described the electrophysiological consequences of experimental demyelination in dorsal roots. He came to the National Hospital for Nervous Diseases and Institute of Neurology, Queen Square, London, in 1963. A long and eminent career followed, both as a neuroscientist and clinical neurologist. Further experimental studies elucidated the pathophysiology of central nervous system demyelination and remyelination. With multiple sclerosis being the major clinical interest, he was at the forefront in developing evoked potentials and MRI as diagnostic tools.×
