Duodenal Perforation by an IVC Filter: A Case and Discussion Expanding on the 2010 Guidelines for Filter Retrieval

Inferior vena cava (IVC) filters are a safe and effective means of providing protection against life-threatening pulmonary embolism (PE) in patients with contraindications to anticoagulation [1]. The use of retrievable IVC filters (R-IVCFs) has increased steadily over the years since their introduction in 2001. However, low retrieval rates, primarily from poor patient follow-up, have led to complications from short- and long-term indwelling filter placement. We discuss a patient who presented to our institution with melena and anemia and who was ultimately found to have an R-IVCF-related caval penetration into the duodenum identified on upper endoscopy almost 4 years after initial placement. …
