Must the Surgeons Move Toward Single-Incision Laparoscopic Surgery Given its Cosmetic Benefits?

The rationale for the single-incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) approach includes reducing morbidity related to unnecessary accessory trocars (fewer traumas to the abdominal wall, fewer complications such as hemorrhage or hernia) by working through a small unique incision. There are other suggested potential benefits over multi-port laparoscopic surgery, including greater patient comfort, less postoperative pain, and a better cosmetic outcome due to a scarless procedure with the entry point hidden at the umbilicus. On the other hand, SILS requires teams with advanced laparoscopic skills and a larger umbilical incision than standard laparoscopy, which could increase the incidence of incisional hernias.
