The article by Bucher and colleagues in this issue of
World Journal of Surgery, describes the technical success of 11 patients undergoing elective single-port-access cholecystectomy [
1]. All procedures were completed with standard laparoscopic instruments, as planned, and 10 of the 11 patients had intraoperative cholangiograms. Bucher et al. concluded that this procedure is feasible, and they report that it seemed safe. In fact, they speculate that it may be safer than natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES), but then acknowledge that the benefits over standard laparoscopic surgery other than cosmesis are yet to be determined [
