In 2004 Claude Organ, then the editor of Archives of Surgery, organized a symposium on surgical journal publication that was held at International Surgical Week in Durban, South Africa in August 2005. The participants were editors or publishers of major international surgical journals. The presentations were sufficiently informative that we received many requests to publish the proceedings. I would like to thank Mike Sarr, co-editor of Surgery, Bob Thomas, editor of the Australia New Zealand Journal of Surgery, Sir Peter Morris, special features editor of Transplantation, and Bill Curtis, Vice President Clinical Medicine, Springer, Inc, the second largest medical publisher and publisher of the World Journal of Surgery, for their contributions to this symposium. …
