It is apparent that very few surgeons in Africa belong to the International Society of Surgeons, myself included. However, I joined when the society agreed to hold its 2005 Congress in Africa. I had little idea of what or who I was associating myself with. Although, past experience has shown that those who have had the courage to take a chance on coming to our continent have proved, with exceptions, to be special people. …
