A 72-year-old male patient was admitted to the Emergency Room with acute jaundice in the absence of other clinical symptoms. Laboratory data demonstrated direct hyperbilirubinaemia related to an obstruction in the biliary tree. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography was planned and a stent was placed in the common bile duct (e, yellow arrow) with progressive resolution of the jaundice. A biopsy of the ampulla of Vater was performed and was negative for cancer. Abdominal CT and MRI scans were performed to exclude pancreatic cancer and were negative. …
