Current controversies in the interpretation of non-accidental head injury

The diagnosis of non-accidental head injury (NAHI) is controversial, emotive and difficult. The ‘stakes’ are high for the affected child, its carers and the caring professions involved in the investigation, treatment and ensuing legal aspects. High profile cases in the UK and USA have highlighted areas of dispute, uncertainty and lack of evidence-based research in the field. Integrating imaging into the complete picture is essential when evaluating suspected NAHI, particularly when preparing reports that may be submitted for child care and/or criminal proceedings. Areas that cause greatest difficulties for the radiologist and that may be encountered in legal proceedings which may emanate from injuries to the young child are discussed. …
