Plastic surgery training in the United Kingdom

Almost 1 year ago the editorial board agreed to the idea that it would be useful if this journal published a series of articles or guidelines on plastic surgery training in the EU countries. Specialists from member states have for some years been able to settle in any of the EU countries and register there as specialists without undertaking any further training or examinations. Although this is in the spirit of European integration or harmonisation, there have been some reservations about the wisdom of such an arrangement. It certainly suits the British health system as it has enabled the government to come close to meeting a wild promise that it would rapidly increase the number of doctors within a relatively short period which would have been totally impossible without the import of foreign graduates. …
