Pierre Delmas has been a dominant figure for decades in clinical research in osteoporosis, with major contributions also in arthritis and the skeletal complications of cancer. He has pursued this work with a depth of analysis and intuition that owes much to his intellectual drive and clinical intuition, but much also to his continuing commitment to understanding the fundamentals of bone biology. This was evident from the earliest stages of his career, and we have selected three of his early publications to illustrate this. …
