There have been developments in the pharmacological treatment of osteoporosis; however, orthopedic surgeons do not have sufficient interest in this disease. Nevertheless, patients are referred to orthopedic surgeons for the treatment of fractures caused by osteoporosis. Most orthopedic surgeons treat the fractures only and forget about osteoporosis, although the probability of a second fracture in these patients is very high. The Fifth Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis Congress/OSTEO 2007 was held in collaboration with the IOF, the WHO Collaborating Center, Bone and Joint Decade, the Turkish Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism, the Turkish Orthopaedic Association, and the Turkish Joint Diseases Foundation on 25–29 April 2007 in Antalya, Turkey, with the aim of raising orthopedic surgeons’ awareness of and interest in osteoporosis. …
