In 1994, the American Thoracic Society and the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine co-published the proceedings of a consensus conference concerning the definitions, mechanisms, relevant outcomes, and clinical trial coordination for studies of the acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) [
