Anal fissure: case report

A 15-year-old girl developed an anal fissure following treatment with isotretinoin for nodulocystic acne. The girl started receiving isotretinoin 40mg twice daily [route not stated] for nodulocystic acne; she was referred 2 months later with anal pain and rectal bleeding to a colorectal surgeon. An anal fissure was diagnosed, and stool softeners were initiated with conservative therapy. Isotretinoin was continued. After 1 month, anal pain persisted. She reported xerosis, epistaxis and cheilitis, on representation to dermatology. Isotretinoin was withdrawn by dermatology, as anal fissure and bleeding were known side effects. Over 4 weeks, her symptoms regressed. …
