The Habitual Use of the Self-report Habit Index

Gardner and colleagues’ [1] review of the association between health-related behavior and habit strength assessed with the Self-report Habit Index (SRHI) helpfully shifts the debate beyond reflective influences on food intake and activity behaviors. The review exemplifies a concerning habit in behavioral medicine on the use of a scale with a number of considerable limitations in correlational research designs, undermining progress into understanding the role of habit in behavior and behavior change. We aim to highlight conceptual, construct validity and other measurement issues in the SRHI with a view to advancing the discourse on the effect of non-reflective influences on health behaviors. …
