Effective open sternum technique after cardiac surgery—sternal spacer technique

Right ventricular (RV) dysfunction and myocardial edema are sometimes encountered in critically ill patients after coming off bypass precluding sternal closure. Methods to keep the sternal edges apart temporarily have been described [1]. We describe a simple technique of making a rigid spacer that we have been practicing for 15 years. This can be easily performed using an ordinary syringe in the operation theatre. …
