For a good part of the 1990s, I had the privilege of serving as a staff physician in a clinic devoted to HIV-infected or affected children and their families. There were days when I wanted to cry and days when I wanted to laugh; sometimes, these coincided. There were days when I was frustrated by some parents’ neglect (as far as their children’s illness was concerned) and days when I was awestruck by the grit and determination of other parents in their efforts to ensure their children’s level of health. There were days when I teetered on being defeated by the massive adverse social factors impacting my patients and their families, and days when I was the one who was lifted by the spirit of children and their families. …
