To the Editor—We read with great interest the article by Dr. Mentes and colleagues from Ankara, Turkey, regarding oblique excision and primary closure of pilonidal disease.1 The debate regarding the optimal surgical technique to treat this common disorder continues.1‐6 Bascom reported that the Surgeon General of the United States forbade wide excision during World War II because of its morbidity and the associated cost of 79,000 hospitalized troops.2 It is disheartening to know that the practice of local excision persists despite simpler and more practical methods of treatment. …
