Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are at risk of developing thromboembolic complications, especially during the active phase of disease. Although the etiology of these complications is unclear, laboratory abnormalities have been documented in patients with ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. The clinical incidence of these complications is low; however, mortality has been reported as high as 25 percent among patients with IBD. We report a case of superior mesenteric artery occlusion in a patient with active ulcerative colitis, a thromboembolic complication reported only once in the literature.
