The evaluation of health benefits in terms of quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) has become a widely applied approach in research and health-care decision making. Yet, health utility assessment methods, which inform QALY calculations, are far from uniform. One important aspect that distinguishes utility assessment methods is the different degree to which they rely on descriptive systems, predictive algorithms and extrapolation to assign utility values to health states. …
