After the first description by the French neurologist Georges Gilles de la Tourette in 1885 [
3], Tourette Syndrome (TS) has fascinated many clinicians and researchers over the decades. But to date there are relatively few studies on tic disorders (PubMed search 29 January 2011,
n = 1,283) and TS (
n = 3,762) compared to other neurodevelopmental disorders with onset in childhood such as attention/deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD,
n = 18,572) or obsessive–compulsive disorders (OCD,
n = 12,558). Thus it is not surprising that the evidence base on etiology, assessment, and treatment is still limited, although there is a high level of clinical experience, particularly in specialized centers. …
