I feel very privileged to have this opportunity to again review the surgical papers in the European Spine Journal. As before my aim is to whet the appetite of readers, so that they dip into the Journal and read for themselves the papers I allude to, and they may find they are distracted to read papers I do not discuss. My selection is idiosyncratic, as it reflects my knowledge and interest, and certain area such as scoliosis and the more complex areas of tumour surgery I feel I cannot comment on. Hence there are many really excellent papers that I do not mention. Last year I commented on how international the European Spine Journal was becoming, and I have been very impressed by the quality and number of papers from China, which now as a country is the single biggest contributor to the Journal, a reflection of course on the size of China it being considerably bigger than Europe. Again I have been struck by the teaching aspect of the Journal, and its great value to the trainees, and those doing Spinal Fellowships. I have discussed papers under various subject headings. …
