Prior to the pandemic, depression and anxiety were steadily increasing in children and adolescents. Between 2013 and 2019, 20.9% of adolescents aged 12–17 years reported ever having experienced a major depressive episode. Persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness increased by 40% between 2009 and 2019 for US high school students, from 26.1 to 36.7% in 2009 and 2019, respectively [
