There is no need for me to make an argument that pediatric nephrologists should keep pace with the breathtaking developments in embryonic development, stem cells and molecular genetics. The pages of our journal attest to steady contributions by our community to the understanding of renal morphogenesis, improvements in the prenatal diagnosis of urological malformation syndromes and identification of the genetic causes of a wide range of diseases. All major scientific publications including the New England Journal of Medicine, BMJ and the Journal of Clinical Investigation have recently published series of review articles aimed at teaching physicians—both clinicians and researchers—about these advances. …
