Colorectal cancer is second only to lung cancer as a cause of cancer-related death in the United States and accounts for ~60,000 deaths per year [11]. Benign adenomatous polyps are believed to be the precursors of most colorectal cancers. The detection and removal of such polyps have been shown to reduce the incidence and mortality of colorectal cancer [15, 16, 28]. Therefore, evidence-based guidelines have been formulated for the screening of adults at average risk for colorectal cancer [25]. However, despite the introduction of these guidelines, ~50% of the average-risk population in the United States has not been screened by any method [1]. …
