Marcora and Staiano (
2010) report the results of an experiment which they claim challenges the “assumption” that muscle fatigue causes exhaustion in highly motivated subjects. They instead conclude that time to exhaustion is “limited by perception of effort”. Their key evidence for these interpretations is that at the point of exhaustion following cycle exercise at 80% of peak aerobic power, the subjects were able to produce three times more power than required by the task.
