In Europe and in North America, portal hypertension accompanies cirrhosis of the liver in over 90 % of the cases. Cirrhosis of the liver is caused by alcohol abuse in about half of the cases; a third is due to chronic viral hepatitis B and C; and the remainder is the result of various metabolic or idiopathic disorders of the liver. …
