Excerpt

A 71-year-old male with colon cancer, who had previously refused elective surgery for personal reasons, now presents emergently with altered mental status, sepsis, and an acute abdomen presumed secondary to a colon perforation. The family urges the surgeon to operate because they want more time with him.
