Surgical Classification of Open Abdomen: Which Clinical Implications?

After a consensus group meeting, Bjorck et al. [1] suggest a new classification system for open abdomen in order to improve the management and, consequently, the outcome of this approach in surgical critical patients. Focusing their attention only on descriptive aspects of intraoperative pattern (contamination, visceral adherence/fixity, and enteric fistula), the authors propose an easy and readily reproducible classification.
